Using UnlockingResearch

UnlockingResearch is the website created by the library about various aspects of the research process. Explore the different sections to see what kind of information is available.

Open the following three pages on UnlockingResearch to see what they are about, then match each of them to a question that could be answered using the information on that page.

Searching for Articles

Go to the list of article databases on the library website. Locate and open ProQuest Research Library.

ProQuest Research Library is a database of articles from scholarly journals and magazines. It has a large number of scholarly journals from many different academic disciplines.

Make sure the "full text" button is selected. (This ensures that you only find articles for which the entire text is available.)

You will see search boxes in which you can type keywords. Let's say you are wondering whether there's a relationship between gender stereotypes and children viewing superhero programs on television.

Try the following search: gender stereotypes superhero viewing.

Find the article where the first author is Sarah M. Coyne and the second author is Jennifer Ruh Linder; click on the title to open it up. Look at the abstract (a summary of an article).

Searching for Ebooks

In the Ebook section found on the library website, locate and open Ebook Central.

Do a search using the keywords gender and clothing. In the list of Book Results find the following book: Pink and Blue: Telling the Boys from the Girls in America.

Tip: If you do the search and do not see your results, just scroll down past the white space.

Click on the Table of Contents icon to the right (if you mouse over the icons, you'll see the labels show up and you'll be able to more easily determine which is the table of contents).

Which of the following is the title of Chapter 5?

Once you're in the correct row, you'll need to find the book on the shelf.

Check the labels on the books to see what point you're at in the call number sequence.
