Litia, a civil engineer, is contracted by a government ministry to develop a new water supply system in the highlands of Viti Levu. The plan, however, prioritises large farms owned by a few influential families, bypassing several small villages that lack clean water. During site visits, Litia learns that the villagers have to walk over an hour to collect water from a stream. When she raises the concern in a team meeting, she’s told that “political priorities” are outside her scope and that she should “just stick to the design.”

Feeling uneasy, Litia consults the IPENZ Code of Ethics and decides to submit a revised design proposal that incorporates access for the neglected communities. Her proposal is initially rejected, but after gaining local support and media attention, the project is adjusted to include all affected groups.

Priya is a structural engineer supervising the construction of a small shopping plaza in Nadi. During a routine inspection, she discovers that the scaffolding used on the upper level is unstable and does not meet the required safety standards. She immediately alerts the site manager, who assures her it will be replaced “soon” but insists work must continue to meet the project deadline.

Priya documents the issue but notices that the unsafe scaffolding remains in use the next day. Concerned for the safety of the workers and the public walking nearby, she escalates the matter to the company’s head office. However, she is warned that such actions may damage the firm’s reputation and her future at the company.

Despite the pressure, Priya issues a stop-work notice and contacts the municipal safety inspector. An inspection confirms her concerns, and the site is temporarily shut down to rectify the hazards.

Ravi is a junior mechanical engineer at a small engineering firm in Suva. One day, the team is tasked with designing a new pressurised piping system for a food processing plant. The senior engineer is away on leave, and the manager asks Ravi to take over the project. Although Ravi has some knowledge of piping systems from university, he has never worked on a live design or performed pressure calculations in a professional setting.

Feeling pressured and eager to prove himself, Ravi accepts the task and completes the design using online tutorials and assumptions. A few weeks after installation, a pipe joint bursts during cleaning operations, causing hot fluid to spray into a staff area. No one is seriously injured, but the plant is temporarily shut down, and an investigation is launched. 

It is later found that Ravi used incorrect pressure ratings for the joints and failed to have the design peer-reviewed or approved by a licensed engineer. The company is fined for professional negligence, and Ravi is issued a formal warning.

Sione is a civil engineer working with a consulting firm that evaluates tenders for public infrastructure projects. During one evaluation round, he discovers that one of the shortlisted bidders is his cousin’s construction company. Although Sione hasn’t spoken to his cousin in years and doesn’t intend to show any bias, he continues to participate in the technical review panel without disclosing the connection.

Later, after the cousin’s company wins the contract, a rival firm raises concerns about the integrity of the process. The review board investigates and finds out about the relationship. Although there is no evidence of actual bias, Sione is reprimanded by his firm.
