This is a slide of the fetal rat. Using this designated fetal slide below, and the neonatal lung virtual slide from PART 1, create a one-page annotated comparison of the two lungs at the different developmental stages.
What you need to do
Using no more than 4 images in total:
key morphological features visible in both the fetal and neonatal lung. Use different magnifications where useful.
– clearly identify the major differences you can see between the fetal and neonatal specimens using descriptive labels where appropriate.

Although the designated fetal specimen is from rat and the neonatal specimen is from human, for the purposes of this assessment assume that the specimens represent the same species. Do not use species differences to explain your observations. Focus only on developmental differences that can be supported by the histological features visible in the slides.
This task allows some flexibility in how you choose to present and annotate your comparison. Where you use references or other sources, including the Lung Development lecture notes, these should be appropriately acknowledged within your one-page submission.

Examine the donor specimen image carefully. Use the position of the catheter and the anatomical structures visible in the specimen to answer the following questions.
Look at the catheter where it crosses the thoracic wall. Which structure is represented by the pale blue/green oval structure close to the catheter?
The catheter tip is visible within a space between the inner thoracic wall and the surface of the lung. What is this space?
