This method is based on the difference in molecular weights of individual analytes. The individual fractions are separated using a porous hydrated gel. Smaller molecules can penetrate even into the smallest pores of the gel and are thus retained longer. Large particles do not fit into small pores, so they are retained only a little, and pass through the system quickly.
