Taking good notes when finding and reading information sources for an assessment task

Asking a friend who has done the subject to lend you their completed assessment task so that you can get an idea of what is needed

Making sure that you allocate enough time to prepare the assessment task

Looking online for a model of the assessment task so that you can copy it

Making sure that you understand the assessment task instructions, and asking the teacher to explain if you are not sure

Making an appointment with an academic skills advisor in the Learning Co-op to check your understanding of the instructions and presentation of your first draft

Use quotation marks to identify unique words or terminology that you borrowed directly from the original source

Once you have made your own notes, go back and read the original text again to make sure you have got the meaning right, making sure to check the overall argument of the author

After you have carefully read the text, put it aside and try to write down the key ideas in your own words

Make sure that you have the complete bibliographical details for the original source noted down before you move to another piece of research

Read over the text several times until you grasp its full meaning.

Use an online thesaurus or paraphrasing tool to change every word or sentence.

Cut and paste the information you want to use from the text and copy it into your draft assignment - you can come back and paraphrase it later

Read the text once carefully and then never read it again

Don't waste your time reading the rest of the article for context, just use the ideas in the specific section that you want to use
