Chapter 10 text

A PATIENT IS VISITING HER GENERAL PRACTITIONER. SHE IS OBVIOUSLY IN ACUTE PAIN:

Hello Mrs. Neel, what brings you here today?

I feel terrible! I haven’t slept all night! I’m in a lot of pain!

 Where does it hurt?

It’s my stomach, Doctor, right here, on the right side of my belly.

All right, and when did it start hurting?

About two days ago. I ate mussels for dinner, and the stomachache started that night.

Did you vomit, or do you feel nauseous?

I vomited during the first night, and again this morning. I don’t really feel nauseous.

 Do you have a fever?

 A little, 37.8oC.

Your pain is very severe, right? Can you rate it on a scale between 0 and 10?

 Hum… About 7.

Ok, and does it hurt when you cough?

 Yes, it does.

All right Mrs. Neel. Please follow me to the examination room and take your shirt off.

The doctor examines her and reaches a diagnosis.

Well, Mrs. Neel, I think you need to be hospitalized as soon as possible. You have appendicitis, and you need surgery.

Oh my god! I have to call my husband to make plans.

Yes, but don’t worry Mrs. Neel. Everything will be ok. I will take care of you.

Chapter 9 text

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF NEURONS

The brain is composed by seventy five percent of water and weighs about one point three kilo, or two percent of our total body weight. It emits one billion signals per second and contains fifty percent of the body’s genes. The nervous system developed six hundred million years ago and consists of one hundred billion neurons.

Understanding and treating nervous system disorders has become one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century. Neurological disorders affect over a billion people worldwide – degenerative illnesses associated with aging (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s), cerebral accidents, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and psychiatric disorders (depression, schizophrenia), among others. Scientists are beginning to comprehend how the brain functions, and therefore how it dysfunctions. In ten years they have made tremendous progress.

However, despite the extensive research devoted to the brain, many questions remain unanswered: How do we think? What is the purpose of sleep? Why are we happy or unhappy? The objective of twenty-first-century brain research is to prevent, repair and heal the nervous system.

There is 500ml. of water in the brain.
