In this stage there is less of a tendency

for team members to keep their guard up as they shed social facades, becoming

more authentic and more argumentative. Group members begin to explore their

power and influence and they often stake out their territory by differentiating

themselves from other group members rather than seeking common ground. Group

members may become defensive

In this stage, there

is a sense

of shared vision and unity; the group is ready to move into high gear. Members are

interdependent and differences are respected. Group members feel like

they are

part of a larger entity. Not only are they getting work done, but they are also

paying

greater attention to how they do it. The team has matured and individuals are more competent,

autonomous, and insightful.

There is a level of formality, some anxiety, and

a degree of guardedness among group members. Due to the uncertainty, members

tend to be polite, conflict avoidant, and observant. This stage is characterized

by abstract discussions about issues to be addressed by the group.

Groups are more committed to each other and

the group’s goal at this stage. They feel energized and are now ready to start to get to

work. Finding themselves somewhat more cohesive and cooperative, they establish their own

ground rules and define their operating procedures and goals. Members are more

open and respectful toward each other and willing to ask one another for both

help and feedback.
