A 25 year old university student presents to the emergency department with a fever, headache, neck stiffness, and a purpuric rash. Lumbar puncture shows cloudy cerebrospinal fluid with elevated protein, decreased glucose, and a high neutrophil count. Gram stain reveals Gram-negative diplococci.
