Digital

literacy is the skill to navigate our digital world using reading, writing,

technical skills, and critical thinking. It’s using technology – like a

smartphone, PC, e-reader, and more – to find, evaluate, and communicate

information. It means having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in

a society where communication and access to information is increasingly

through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media, and

mobile devices.

In 2021, 95% of young people aged 16-29

years in the EU reported using the internet daily. Although the internet can

provide a place for young people to share their experiences and to exchange

their views, there are also risks. It is equally important to address safety

concerns and to teach young people to analyse, compare and critically

evaluate the credibility and reliability of sources of data, information and

digital content. Despite the high number of young people using the internet,

only 36%, at an EU level, engage in activities related to fact-checking

online information and its sources.

After your talk, please, answer three questions:

1. How can digital literacy

skills help someone in their career?

2. What can schools do to

improve young people’s digital literacy skills?

3. Why is it important to

fact-check information before sharing it online?
