Laboratory rules and procedures:
Covered ShoesYou must wear enclosed shoes to every lab session. These must fully cover your foot, up to at least the ankle. Shoes must be closed at the toe and heel, and offer full protection — styles like sandals, ballet flats, slippers, or Crocs (even with the strap on) are not permitted. Shoes that only partially cover the foot (e.g. up to the midfoot) do not meet lab safety requirements and students wearing them will be asked to leave the lab.
Side note: There is a very limited supply of emergency enclosed shoes stored in the lab office (they’re very ugly — you’ve been warned) that may be loaned out in rare cases. This option cannot be relied on at all, as it depends entirely on availability at that specific lab session, and it won’t be offered more than once.
If you are turned away due to inappropriate footwear and choose to complete the online lab instead, it will count as your once-per-term free swap to an online lab.
Eating or Drinking
No eating or drinking is allowed in the lab! — not even water. If you need to eat or drink, you must step outside the lab.
You can use either the main entrance of the lab or stairwell (fire escape) located directly in front of the 113 lab office (no more than two students are allowed on this stairwell at a time, and the door should remain closed when not in use).
Please store your water bottle in your bag, under the table.
If you are caught eating or drinking in the lab, or even having a water bottle on the table, the incident will be formally recorded, the Lab Director will be notified, and immediate action will be taken. This may include your safety quiz mark being reset, in which case you would need to re-complete the quiz before attending future labs. You may also be asked to leave the lab, and you will not be permitted to complete the online lab instead. In cases of repeated offences, you may be banned from the lab for the rest of the term.
Running in the LabYou cannot run in the lab. If you are caught running in the lab you may be asked to leave. You will NOT be allowed to do the online lab.
Non-compliance reporting process and consequences
If you are caught breaking the safety rules —for example, eating or drinking in the lab, or wearing improper footwear — the incident will be formally recorded using the ‘SCI PHYS Non-Compliance Recorder’ application.
The consequences depend on how many previous non-compliance incidents have been recorded:
- First incident: The incident is recorded, and you will be reminded of the laboratory safety rules by the reporting staff member.
- Second incident: The incident is recorded, and your Moodle Safety Quiz mark will be removed. You will need to re-complete the Safety Quiz before you can continue receiving marks for future lab sessions.
- Third incident: The incident is recorded, your laboratory marks will be withheld, and you will be referred to the Head of School. Students might be banned from the lab for the rest of the term.
If a student displays non-compliant behavior more than once within a single lab session, they will be immediately removed from the lab, their marks will be removed, and the relevant Laboratory Director will be notified. They will NOT be allowed to do the online lab in this case.
Lab Manual
YOU SHOULD COLLECT A COPY OF THE LAB NOTES FROM THE FIRST YEAR LAB. The lab notes are free.
You must bring your lab manual to every lab session. If you do not bring your lab manual, you will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to complete the lab that day.
If you are turned away due to not bringing your lab manual and choose to complete the online lab instead, it will count as your once-per-term free swap to an online lab.
Being late
If you are 15 minutes late to your lab class, you will not be permitted to work in the lab.
Finish work 15 mins before the end of the labEveryone is required to finish their work 15 minutes before the end of the lab. At this time, you will be required to present your work for marking, pack up and clean your equipment.
PlagiarismCopying data is plagiarism. If you come to the lab with data already written on lab worksheets, you will get zero for that lab. There is no reason to bring data into the lab. If you bring someone else's completed lab manual to the lab, you will get zero and so will the owner of the work you bring in.
Getting markedFill out your name and student number under the tick boxes on the marking guidelines at the beginning of the lab session. As you finish each part of the experiment, you should get marked off.
MoodleAt the end of your lab, the demonstrator will enter your mark on an iPad, to be uploaded to Moodle at the end of your lab week. Make sure that this is done. You should be able to view your mark on Moodle before your next lab session. If you can not see your mark, please talk with you lab Demonstrator-in-Charge in your lab class.
Asking demonstrators questionsYou do not lose marks for asking demonstrators questions. They are there to help you. The labs are a good opportunity to ask people about physics. Do not leave your questions until the end of the lab, they should be asked before the last 15 minutes, as demonstrators will need this time to mark people off quickly at the end.
Legal requirement for a safety induction
UNSW is legally required to do a safety induction for everyone who is using a laboratory space on campus.
