Jonathan Bradfield has been farming for 42 years and is currently the owner of Limestone Hill, outside Bathurst in the Eastern Cape. Jonathan farms mainly with pineapples together with his sons-in-law, Anton Ferreira and Albert van der Westhuizen. Back in 1980, Bradfield decided, together with the pineapple farms, to go into dairying and started a dairy stud. Both businesses grew to a point where a decision had to be made on which should receive the available resources. Bradfield decided to focus on the pineapple farms, and while cattle remained on the farm, the shift in focus enabled the pineapple farms to thrive and expand. There is natural grazing on most of the farm, and 70 hectares of Oats and 200 hectares of kikuyu are planted every year to rehabilitate the soil. Bradfield is also a big believer in crop rotation on the pineapple farms and has refrained from using serious nematicides in the soil for the past 20 years as part of their movement to sustainable farming.
