Lake Tanganyika in East Africa is home to cichlid fishes that care for their eggs and young by carrying them in their mouths. A species of catfish living in the same lake will lay their own eggs near a pair of spawning cichlids. The female cichlid will unknowingly pick up the eggs of the catfish, which will then hatch inside the cichlid mother’s mouth and proceed to eat all of the cichlid’s eggs before being released by the cichlid.
