Question 3

The horizontal rigid beam ABCD is supported by vertical bars BE and CF and is loaded by vertical forces P1 and P2 acting at points A and D. Both bars are made from steel (E = 200 GPa) and have a square cross-section with side length 25 mm.

Assume: LAB = 1.8 m, LBC = 1.8 m, LCD = 2.3 m, LCF = 1.6 m, LEF = 0.9 m.

Match the loading scenarios with the correct geometry of deformation sketches.

The dashed line is the original horizontal position (datum) of beam ABCD. Make sure that the bar elongations match the stress states: for a elongation above the datum, the bar will be in tension, and visa versa.
