Jonathan Bradfield has been farming for 42 years and is currently the owner of Limestone Hill, outside Bathurst in the Eastern Cape. Jonathan farms mainly with pineapples together with his sons-in-law, Anton Ferreira and Albert van der Westhuizen. Back in 1980, Bradfield decided, together with the pineapple farms, to go into dairying and started a dairy stud. Both businesses grew to a point where a decision had to be made on which should receive the available resources. Bradfield decided to focus on the pineapple farms, and while cattle remained on the farm, the shift in focus enabled the pineapple farms to thrive and expand. For cattle, Bradfield chose the Beefmasters cattle breed as they are the best suited to the environment and crops available on the farm. There is natural grazing on most of the farm, and 70 hectares of Oats and 200 hectares of kikuyu are planted every year to rehabilitate the soil. Natural grazing, crop rotation and soil rehabilitation represent the _____ sub-environment encompassed in Limestone Hill’s _____ environment.
