To stiffen up the sand so it hold it shape when the pattern is removed.

Coated generously on the pattern and between the sand in the cope and drag to allow for easy release of the pattern from the sand and separation of the cope and drag for pattern removal.

Added to the mix used in plastering of walls to allow the diffusion and evaporation of moisture.

As a binding agent to help the sand stick together and keep it's shape.
