Should Schools replace Printed Textbooks with Digital Material?

The increasing availability of digital learning materials has led some schools to consider replacing

printed textbooks entirely. Advocates argue that digital resources are cheaper to update, easier to

distribute, and capable of providing interactive learning experiences. Although these advantages

are significant, replacing printed materials altogether may create educational problems that deserve

careful consideration.

One major concern is concentration. Students often interact with digital devices in environments

filled with notifications, applications, and other distractions. Even when unnecessary functions are

disabled, the device itself can encourage students to switch between learning and entertainment.

Printed books, by contrast, provide a more limited environment in which

sustained

reading may

be easier.

Another issue involves accessibility. Digital materials appear convenient because a single device

can contain hundreds of books. However, this convenience depends on reliable electricity,

functioning hardware, and appropriate software. Students whose access to these resources is

limited may be placed at a disadvantage. A school that assumes every learner can maintain

continuous access to a suitable device risks increasing rather than reducing inequality.

This does not mean digital resources should be rejected. Their ability to incorporate videos,

simulations, updated information, and interactive exercises makes them valuable educational tools.

The more reasonable approach is therefore not to choose one format exclusively but to determine

which medium is most appropriate for a particular learning objective.

For subjects requiring frequent updates, digital resources may be highly effective. For extended

reading or situations where technological access is uncertain, printed materials may remain

preferable. Rather than treating technology as a replacement for established methods, school

should view it as an additional instrument whose effectiveness depends on how thoughtfully it is

used.
