The Legend of Mount Bromo

Long ago, in East Java, there lived a kingdom called Tengger. The king, Roro Anteng, and his queen, Joko Seger, were beloved by their people but had no children. After years of praying, the gods granted them 25 children, but with one condition: the 25th child must be sacrificed to the mountain to keep the land fertile.

When the 25th child, Kesuma, was born, the royal couple could not bear to sacrifice him. The mountain then became angry, causing earthquakes and droughts. Realizing their mistake, Kesuma willingly walked into the mountain's crater to save his people. Since then, the Tengger people have held an annual ceremony called "Yadnya Kasada" to honor him and the mountain, which is now known as Mount Bromo.
