The Somerton Man, as he came to be called, would probably have been forgotten were it not for one unusual detail. When the dead man’s clothes were searched again a few weeks later, the coroner found a secret pocket in his trousers. In the secret pocket was a scrap of paper. It was from a page that had been ripped out of a book. There were two words on the scrap of paper and those two words were Tamám Shud. Tamám Shud! What could it mean? Well, it turned out that those were the last two words from a very old poem that had been written by an eleventh-century poet called Omar Khayyám. The page had come from a book of Omar Khayyam’s poetry and the words meant It’s finished or The end..

What did the coroner find in the secret pocket of the Somerton Man’s trousers that ultimately led to the identification of the source material as a poem by Omar Khayyam?
