This is a high magnification histological section.
What type of blood vessel is labelled 'A'? What type of blood vessel is labelled 'B'?
This low magnification histological section shows two different blood vessel types for comparison. At this level, corresponding blood vessels can often be found in close proximity to one another.
What blood vessel type is labelled 'A'?
This transverse histological image is an example of what type of blood vessel?
The atria have out-pouches called auricles (= 'ears'). These are visible mostly from the anterior view of the heart. Internally, the auricles of the atria contain mostly pectinate muscle.
On this image above which labels indicate the right and left auricles of the atria? Select 2 options

This is a slide of the fetal rat. Using this designated fetal slide below, and the neonatal lung virtual slide from PART 1, create a one-page annotated comparison of the two lungs at the different developmental stages.
What you need to do
Using no more than 4 images in total:
key morphological features visible in both the fetal and neonatal lung. Use different magnifications where useful.
– clearly identify the major differences you can see between the fetal and neonatal specimens using descriptive labels where appropriate.
.
.
.
Although the designated fetal specimen is from rat and the neonatal specimen is from human, for the purposes of this assessment assume that the specimens represent the same species. Do not use species differences to explain your observations. Focus only on developmental differences that can be supported by the histological features visible in the slides.
This task allows some flexibility in how you choose to present and annotate your comparison. Where you use references or other sources, including the Lung Development lecture notes, these should be appropriately acknowledged within your one-page submission.

Marks
Selection & labelling of morphological features
Images are well selected across appropriate magnifications. Key features in both fetal and neonatal lung are accurately identified and clearly labelled.
Appropriate images and most key features are correctly identified and labelled; minor omissions/errors.
Some relevant features identified, but important structures are missing, unclear or incorrectly labelled.
Few relevant features identified and/or substantial inaccuracies.
/4
Comparison of fetal vs neonatal morphology
Makes clear, direct comparisons between the specimens, identifying the major morphological differences visible in the slides.
Identifies several relevant differences, with generally effective comparison between specimens.
Describes both specimens but comparison is limited or largely separate rather than direct.
Minimal comparison or observations are largely generic/not supported by the slides.
/4
Structure–function interpretation
Clearly explains (using descriptive labels) why the observed morphology differs, linking specific features to fetal versus neonatal lung from a fluid-filled to air-breathing lung.
Appropriate structure–function links with mostly clear explanations.
Some structure–function links, but explanations are superficial or not consistently tied to visible morphology.
Limited or inaccurate understanding of the functional significance of the observed differences.
/4
Application of lung development concepts
Effectively applies relevant concepts from the Lung Development lecture to interpret specific features observed in the specimens.
Appropriate developmental concepts applied, with some connection to observed morphology.
Some relevant developmental knowledge included, but largely descriptive or weakly connected to the specimens.
Little relevant application of developmental concepts and/or predominantly generic information.
/4
Fetal developmental stage & justification
Provides a plausible human developmental stage, justified using multiple specific morphological features visible in the images.
Plausible stage with appropriate morphological justification.
Stage suggested but justification is limited, vague or only partly supported by the specimen.
Stage is unsupported/inaccurate or not attempted.

Presentation & requirements
Clear, concise and visually effective use of images and descriptive labels. Meets all requirements: ≤4 images, ≤1 A4 page, ≥12-point font, PDF.
Generally clear presentation with minor issues.
Presentation makes interpretation difficult and/or requirements are not fully followed.
Poorly organised or substantial requirements not followed.
