Colina et al. (1970) proposed the following rate expression for SO2 oxidation in the presence of vanadium-pentoxide catalyst.

  • Inlet rate of SO2 = 100 kmol/hr
  • Inlet oxygen to SO2 mole ratio = 2
  • Inlet temperature = 420 C
  • Inlet pressure = 3 atm

Perform the following calculations

  1. Estimate the mass of catalyst (derive an explicit expression, show the steps in the answer book) for a SO2 conversion of 0.4.
  2. Solve any one

    1. Include the above kinetics and numerically integrate the equations assuming an Ideal gas behaviour, to find the mass of the catalyst for a conversion of 0.4
