04. When Apollo 14 landed on the Moon, 40 years ago this week, mission commander Alan Shepard was the oldest astronaut to have flown in space. In order to fulfill his dream of walking on the Moon, 47-year-old Shepard had to fend off criticism of his age and overcome a health condition which had dogged his career. While age poses no particular barrier to being an astronaut today, in the early days of human space flight, officials were unsure what influence the ageing process might have on performance during a mission. Shepard died in 1998 of leukaemia. But in a 1991 interview, he recalled the questions over his age: “We got all kinds of flak from the guys. In the first place, I hadn’t flown anything since 1961, and here it was 10 years later, and the two guys with me had not flown before at all, so they called us the three rookies. We had to put up with that. And then the fact that everybody said: ‘That old man shouldn’t be up there on the Moon.’ As if it wasn’t enough of a challenge as it was, but that was part of the make-up of all those guys. 03. A leaking oil and gas pipeline has caused a mile-long slick off India’s western coast, says the state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONG. The leak occurred in the Mumbai-Uran trunk oil pipeline and an ONGC spokesman described it as “small”. The leak, discovered at 8.45 am (0315 GMT), was plugged after two hours and oil was diverted through another pipeline, the spokesman told the B.B.C. 02. Car manufacturer Toyota is recalling nearly 19, 000 cars in the UK due to potential problems with their fuel systems, it was announced today. The company said hundreds of Toyota Avensis and Lexus IS 250 models could be at risk of fuel leaks and will need to be modified by mechanics. For comic book fans around the world, a handful of cities evoke strong images: superheroes jumping from skyscrapers in New York; Tintin running across a building in a Brussels mural; wide-eyed schoolgirls looking for romance in Tokyo. But colorful cityscapes, designed by local artists, are finally putting an African capital city on the comic map. The place is Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and it is not difficult to see why. Complete with dusty boulevards, monster traffic jams in blazing sunsets and so-called shegue, or street children, such comic portraits of the Congolese capital are among the main features of the style developed by home-grown talent.
