SD-WAN can only be implemented virtually, since it is a software-controlled network. 

SD-WAN is not implemented, it is only a matter of connecting to a service through the internet. 

SD-WAN can only be implemented physically, the necessity of  network hardware cannot be ignored. 

SD-WAN can be implemented physically or virtual, or a combination of both, as long as all elements are supporting the instruction set.
