Coastal municipalities in South Africa, along with other spheres of government, are tasked with 'coastal management', which is defined in terms of section 1 of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act 24 of 2008 as: 1 - Limiting the amount of people that visit the coastal zones. 2 - The regulation and management of the use and development of the coastal zone and coastal resources. 3 - Monitoring and enforcing compliance with laws and policies that regulate human activities within the coastal zone. 4 - Encouraging commercial fishing to boost the economy.
