An 11-month-old baby was shown a white rat. Initially the baby was not afraid of the rat as he had never seen one before. When he reached out to touch it, the experimenters made a loud bang to frighten him. After combining the presentation of the rat with the loud bang several times, the child burst into tears as soon as he saw the rat. He would also cry at the sight of objects that looked similar, like a furry coat or a dog.
