What does the form factor describe in the formula for the differential cross section?

Question

Accepted Answer

For a non-pointlike scattering centre, it accounts for the combined effect of scattering from the charge distribution described by its density.

Answer

It accounts for the possibility that scattering may also cause excitations, allowing inelastic scattering to be described as elastic scattering.

Answer

For the scattering of ultra-relativistic spin-half particles, it describes the relativistic correction to the differential cross section.

Answer

It accounts for recoil effects, thereby providing a corrected result.
