Online courses have expanded rapidly and have the potential to extend further the educational opportunities of many students particularly those least well served by traditional educational institutions. However, in their current design online courses are difficult, especially for the students who are least prepared. These students’ learning and persistence outcomes are worse when they take online courses than they would have been had these same students taken in-person courses.

When people share or interact with disinformation they see online, they have essentially been persuaded to do so by its originators. How does this happen? In some circumstances, we may carefully consider the information available. At other times, we make quick decisions. Sharing information on social media is likely to be spontaneous and quick, rather than a considered action that people spend time deliberating over.

A study (2020) on social media finds that 59% of US adults believe the information shared on
social platforms is inaccurate. That means that over half of US adults who use social media to
get news question its accuracy. It appears that what they find does not give them the answers
they are looking for. Just 30% of respondents say social media helps them understand current
events, and 23% even say it leaves them more confused.
