VATSIM is a community that strives to simulate the aviation ecosystem as realistically as possible, understanding that things like technology / simulator variations, volunteer staffing limitations, etc. can require adaptations to accommodate.  Pilots are expected to have a reasonably moderate level of foundational aviation knowledge, and be familiar enough with the aviation ecosystem and their aircraft before connecting to the VATSIM network.

No prior aviation knowledge is required, as VATSIM requires completion of the formal pilot rating certification program for all users.

VATSIM users must not only be proficient, but must hold current Subject Matter Expert Certification (or higher) by the International Flight Simulation Association.
