What is a portfolio?

A portfolio is a collection of written documents,

audio or video tape recordings, references, certificates or other

items.  It usually lists the criteria against which you aim to prove the

competence;

Provides evidence that your competence meets these

criteria; and is organised in ways that enable an assessor to evaluate the

evidence against the criteria.

Categories of evidence

SAQA defines applied competence as having three

elements:

Practical

competence

(the demonstrated ability to perform a set of tasks)

Foundational

 competence

(the demonstrated understanding of what we are doing and why)

Reflexive

 competence

(the demonstrated ability to learn from our action and adapt to changes or

unforeseen circumstances).

You should include evidence of all three kinds of

competence in your portfolio.

What should your evidence aim to prove?

The evidence you provide in your portfolio should

aim to prove that you are competent against the outcomes described in the

unit standard that the programme is aligned against.  You will need to

interpret these outcomes in relation to your own workplace.

What counts as good evidence?

Good evidence is usually

Valid

 (it

should relate to what is being assessed)

Current

 (it

should be as recent as possible)

Sufficient

 (there

should be enough evidence, but not too much)

Authentic

 (you

must generate your own evidence at the workplace and may not use the

evidence/work of other people in any form)
