A patient has presented with symptoms consistent with bacterial meningitis. A rapid latex agglutination test has been used to detect bacterial antigen in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The test can detect antigen from:

  • Streptococcus group B
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus)
  • Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) groups A, B, C, Y or W135
  • Escherichia coli K1
All of these aforementioned bacterial pathogens can cause the disease meningitis.

Note: the E. coli K1 antigen and the Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) group B antigen are structurally and immunologically related and cannot be distinguished by this test.

View and interpret the test results shown below. A positive control has also been included.
