The insertion box below has three plug compartments (red, yellow and blue). There are short circuits between the pair of terminals at the side of each compartment. These short circuits allow the line currents to flow through the insertion box to the three phase load. When the plug of the insertion box is inserted into a compartment the short circuit corresponding to that compartment is replaced by whatever circuitry is connected across the black terminals.

Please state which of the following statements are TRUE.

  1. If the plug is inserted into the red compartment, the circuit across the black terminals is inserted into the red phase.

  2. If the plug is inserted into the yellow compartment, the circuit across the black terminals is inserted into the yellow phase.

  3. If the plug is inserted into the blue compartment, the circuit across the black terminals is inserted into the blue phase.

  4. If the plug is inserted into any of the compartments and there is nothing connected across the black terminals, it will insert an open circuit into the line associated with that plug compartment.

The inductive and resistive loading banks shown below have three phases (banks A, B and C).  Each of these banks (A, B,C) have their internal components in parallel.

Indicate whether the following statement is TRUE or FALSE.

"As more switches are turned on in either the inductive or the resistive banks, the inductance or resistance increases respectively."

Three single phase transformers (picture below) can be connected together to form a single three phase transformer (the 4 diagrams below).

Identify the four (4) different three phase transformers shown in the diagrams below by matching the diagrams with the correct label from the drop down lists.

For each diagram, assume the primary is on the left and the secondary is on the right.

Transformer Polarity refers to the relative direction of the induced voltages between the high voltage terminals and the low voltage terminals. During the AC half-cycle when the applied voltage is from X1 to X2 the secondary induced voltage direction will be from H1 to H2.In practice, polarity refers to the way the leads are brought out of the transformer.  An understanding of polarity is essential to correctly construct a three-phase transformer from single-phase transformers.

Which of the following statements are FALSE?

  1. Wattmeters are used to measure reactive power.
  2. Wattmeters have a current coil and a voltage coil.
  3. The wattmeter voltage coil behaves similarly to an ammeter and the current coil similar to a voltmeter.
  4. The voltage coil must be connected across the supply terminals and and current coil must be connected in series with the load.
  5. Low power factor wattmeters are used to accurately measure the power to loads with lower power factors e.g. inductive loads.
  6. Unity power factor wattmeters are used to measure capacitive loads.
  7. The top image shows a unity power pf wattmetter and the bottom image shows a low pf wattmeter.
  8. Two wattmeter method is a method utilising two wattmeters that is used to measure three phase power such that
  9. Two wattmeter method CANNOT be used when the neutral of a wye/star connected load or the phases of a delta connected load are inaccessible.
