Jonathan Bradfield has been farming for 42 years and is currently the owner of Limestone Hill, outside Bathurst in the Eastern Cape. Jonathan farms mainly with pineapples together with his sons-in-law, Anton Ferreira and Albert van der Westhuizen. Son-in-law Anton Ferreira has been farming with Bradford for the past seven years. Responsibility for the main farming activities was transferred to Ferreira in 2022. Ferreira was also responsible for the establishment and growth of the dried pineapple business unit of the farm. He has a background in water culture, so it was a natural progression to that side of the business. Bradfield gave Ferreira full rein in developing the product and establishing the necessary processes. Ferreira tries to instil trust and confidence in the workers on the farm. This not only allows the growth of skills and responsibilities among his employees, but also garners great team spirit. He often allows employees to form part of the decision-making process, and there is always open communication between all levels of management. Ferreira’s characteristics indicate that he fulfils the _____ managerial role, more specifically a/n _____ role well.

In 1997, the gigantic media-services provider Netflix was born. From the beginning, Netflix proved to be a disruptive organisation, which has likely contributed to its capability to transform and adapt to the digital world. Streaming began in 2007 for the business, and this meant that subscribers no longer needed to wait for DVDs to come through the mail. Netflix successfully implemented change management to meet the needs of the consumers who would begin to watch content online. Netflix’s global growth is a big factor in the company’s success. By 2017, it was operating in over 190 countries and, today, close to 73 million of its 130 million subscribers are outside the United States of America. Netflix’s globalisation strategy and many of the challenges it has had to overcome are unique. Netflix secures content deals region by region, and sometimes country by country. It also had to face a diverse set of national regulatory restrictions, such as those that limit what content can be made available in the different local markets. Netflix’s global growth in 2017 is an example of a _____ corporate growth strategy.

Jonathan Bradfield has been farming for 42 years and is currently the owner of Limestone Hill, outside Bathurst in the Eastern Cape. Jonathan farms mainly with pineapples together with his sons-in-law, Anton Ferreira and Albert van der Westhuizen. Bradfield is a third-generation farmer, and when asked what the largest changes are that have occurred from when the former generations farmed until now, he claimed economies of scale. Thinking back, he states that pineapple farmers farmed around 1500 to 2000 tons of pineapples per annum. These days, a farmer needs to produce around 4000 to 5000 tons to be economically viable. Everyone had to expand dramatically to stay in business. How the farm is managed has also changed. Bradfield’s father placed great importance on the bottom line and focused on productivity and efficiency to retain their profit margins. While Bradfield still places high value on productivity and efficiency, he has found that placing the same high value on your staff allows for greater gains. “Employees should understand the task at hand, and trust and commitment should form part of each relationship,” Bradfield explained. It is this attitude that allowed the farm to expand quickly, which was needed to ensure economies of scale. According to the Blake and McCanse leadership grid, Bradfield embodies a/n ____ leadership style, while his father embodied a/n ____ leadership style.

Jonathan farms mainly with pineapples together with his sons-in-law, Anton Ferreira and Albert van der Westhuizen. In 2008, Bradfield also decided to branch out into the drying of pineapples. The decision was based on adding additional value to the pineapple fruit. At the time, it was a new idea and very unorthodox. To test the viability of the product, Bradfield dried a few pineapples using his biltong dryer and offered the community some product samples to receive feedback. Jonathan Bradfield’s activities indicate that he fulfils the _____ managerial role, more specifically a/n _____ role.

Netflix proved to be a disruptive organisation, which has likely contributed to its capability to transform and adapt to the digital world. Netflix first started streaming in South Africa in 2016. With a diverse population and many cultures in South Africa, Netflix adjusted their algorithms to provide a wide variety of shows and movies that would suit most demographics and cultures. Decisions are taken by Mark Gavill, South Africa’s content engineer, and his team to ensure the most watched content is continued, with similar content being added. Each week, Gavill and his team receive statistical information on the content, based on the number of views as well as views per province. The information is grouped and presented in such a way that a holistic view of the content can be deduced at a glance, preventing the overwhelming task of having to read through all the statistics on a weekly basis. Gavill and his team then write a memo with instructions for which content to add, and it is distributed to the different content departments. There are five content departments, each with different genres of content to locate, purchase, if necessary, and upload to the Netflix South Africa server. The manager of each content department then reports back to Gavill when the instructions have been completed. Having content managers report to Gavill gives him _______ speaking to the _______.
